Accident or injury. A lost passport. A positive COVID-19 test. When a travel emergency arises, traditional travel insurance won’t come to your aid, and a medical evacuation can cost up to $300,000.
Travel insurance is designed to protect your wallet against trip interruption, lost or damaged luggage and medical emergencies. A Global Rescue membership protects you and your wallet in the event of a travel emergency requiring field rescue, medical evacuation and transport (including COVID-19). Unlike travel insurance, there are no claims to file, no deductibles or copays, and no reimbursements to request when you have a Global Rescue membership. Instead, a Global Rescue membership provides its services at no additional cost beyond your membership.
Joseph Campbell, a writer and professor who studied comparative mythology, said, “The journey of the hero is about the courage to seek the depths; the image of creative rebirth; the eternal cycle of change within us.”
We have one life—it is our responsibility to make it our own and to make it one worth living.
At SHIFT, we use the monomyth of the Hero’s Journey and the archetype of the Hero to guide the process of change and transformation in our therapeutic intensives and trips.
When our lives are told through story, we can identify patterns and pitfalls in their clearest form, as well as discover courage and kindness. Our messy lives are normalized, and we find the grace and self-compassion to step out of shame and move forward on our own path to self-discovery and self-actualization.
This can be a deliberate choice or can be forced on the hero. If we are paying close enough attention, we will notice the signs that change is necessary. If we ignore these whisperings, change becomes inevitable and often comes to the hero/heroine in more painful ways.
Allies are individuals that assist the hero/heroine on their journey. However, there are counterfeits along the way, also knows as ogres. These are individuals that may outwardly show they want to assist, but may have more self-serving motives. These can also be individuals who seek to control or manipulate the hero's outcome.
The hero must prepare for all of the challenges that they will face on their journey. This preparation often includes physical, spiritual, mental and emotional learning and growth.
The guardians of the threshold are the gatekeepers standing between the ordinary world and the new world. We must identify our guardians in order to step out of status quo and into our growth zone where learning and change happens. Guardians can often look like fear, need to control, self-doubt, trauma and so on.
This is the moment when the hero realizes their potential for change and steps over the threshold into the new world with both feet-knowing that there is no turning back once they make this decision. This is where chaos, pain and ultimately salvation come.
The road of trials feels like three steps forward and two steps back. The hero/heroine cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel and they may second guess their decision to answer their call to adventure. The guardians of the threshold may follow them into this place and work to get the hero/heroine to stop enduring through the challenges they are facing.
Someone or something comes along and reminds the hero/heroine that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. This person or experience reminds the hero that they can do hard things, that they have made it through the worst of their ordeal and that meaning is being created from their struggle.
The hero/heroine finds their boon or gift that they have been searching for on their quest. This could include confidence, self-love, healing from trauma, sobriety, and so on. The hero transforms a part of themselves that was not serving them into a meaningful and useful aspect of their character. We do not defeat our guardians by fighting them, rather by accepting and loving them.
The hero/heroine returns to the normal world or status quo, but they are different. And what makes them different is what will inspire them and others to continue going on their own hero's journeys.
It is not the destination, but the journey that matters. The gift that is to be shared is often the hero's story that is shared with others that inspires, uplifts and vitalizes. It is not enough that the hero is changed, their new way of walking through the world helps others to find their transformation as well.
